Whether you are a long time artist or just beginning to get your toes wet, I know we have all been in a place where the mention of color theory can be a bit intimidating. We want to be in the fun and flow of the process, yet all of sudden we pull a print that is uninspiring and looks like… mud. My goal in this course is to teach color theory for the gel plate so that color theory is your best friend in the fun and flow of gel printing!
Monoprinting can be very user friendly and easy. Thanks to stencils, stamps, and other tools, one can overcome the challenges of art. However, the one place where gel printing can really throw us is when it comes to color, due to the subtle tonal mixing that happens on the plate. Every one of us can feel stuck in a no man’s land with sterile colors that come from cleaning the plate too often on one side, and uninspiring mud prints on the other. In this course, you will learn to experience the very best of both worlds: rich, emboldened color palettes, images, and textures.
In traditional monoprinting, paints are usually transparent, which allows for layers to build up. This requires color theory because the printer has to layer paints on top of one another. The best part of this process is that you often end up with a color that has never been named yet! However, when the current gel plates came out, acrylic paints were mainly used. This often causes colors to be covered, which results in more basic palettes and relationships. However! When you push the gel plate and start applying traditional printmaking techniques,you start to get really rich and immense color palettes. If you are mimicking these processes and have not been trained and have not been trained in color theory, your eyes may not “see” the colors. Many artists have a big problem with color and yearn for training to see color in all of its intricacies.
Being able to see multiple color palettes in a picture will allow you to create multiple color palettes. It will also teach you how to pull out the colors you need to make your palette more complete. In this class we will go deep into these concepts and explore them hands-on. We will pull and check prints, and I will be on hand to help you. We will set goals on what we want to accomplish, show you what might be missing and how to fix it, and most of all, you will walk away with your own individualized color palettes!
Your Instructor
Robyn is a Nationally know artist living in the Southwest, exhibiting nationally and internationally with exhibitions in the Smithsonian Museums, Corcoran Art Gallery and art in the permanent collections of The MOMA as well as other notable collections.
She is a Master Bookbinder and Papermaker having studied in the tradition of Apprenticing as these were dying art forms in the 80's and only being revived by artists. She subsequently taught in Universities and Museum systems as an Adjunct Professor, often times setting up the programs in the Art Departments of these Schools nationally, as the discipline of "Book as Art" was becoming recognized as a significant art form.
Her design experience has won notable commissions: these include creating a distinctive award for Dr. Dorothy Irene Height's "Uncommon Height" Project which celebrated those who through their outstanding contributions has contributed to this country's advancement. Previous recipients have been Oprah, Dr. Maya Angelou, Vanessa Williams and Vernon Jordan, to name a few. Additionally, She has designed for Essence Communications, Ikea, Target, and UNICEF.
Robyn continues to work with individuals to help them create businesses and projects that incorporate their ideas, goals and dreams through personal Authenticity Coaching, Workshops, Seminars and Webinars.
