Explore 25+ techniques ideal for collage, journaling, and mixed media—each rich enough to inspire entire sessions. One of the biggest frustrations as a mixed-media artist is finding the perfect decorative paper—except it's in the wrong colors. You love the texture and finish, but it doesn’t fit your style or project. That’s where making your own papers becomes magical. You control the palette to match your aesthetic, add your unique marks and textures, and create materials that truly reflect your artistic voice. These papers aren’t just backgrounds—they carry the mood, message, and meaning of your work. Handmade decorative papers are essential in collage, journaling, bookmaking, and more—and one of the most rewarding parts of the creative process.

Across cultures, the five elements Earth, Water, Fire, Air, & Space—shape spiritual traditions & art. This course explores these forces through collage, using color & composition to create personal narratives. Move beyond Western color theory, learn how color meanings shift across cultures. Red may symbolize passion in one tradition or mourning in another. By exploring these perspectives, artists develop a deeper sensitivity to color’s role in storytelling. Each element holds distinct qualities: Earth yellow represents stability, Water blue reflects emotion, Fire red signifies transformation, Air green embodies renewal, and Space black represents the unknown. These energies appear in traditions worldwide, from Navajo sand paintings to Mayan geometry. Through guided exercises, participants create mandalas using found images and textures, blending structure & spontaneity.
