The Five Elements x Five Directions Collage Course - Color Theory Through Anthropology & Symbolism
Across cultures, the five elements Earth, Water, Fire, Air, & Space—shape spiritual traditions & art. This course explores these forces through collage, using color & composition to create personal narratives.
Move beyond Western color theory, learn how color meanings shift across cultures. Red may symbolize passion in one tradition or mourning in another. By exploring these perspectives, artists develop a deeper sensitivity to color’s role in storytelling. Each element holds distinct qualities: Earth yellow represents stability, Water blue reflects emotion, Fire red signifies transformation, Air green embodies renewal, and Space black represents the unknown. These energies appear in traditions worldwide, from Navajo sand paintings to Mayan geometry. Through guided exercises, participants create mandalas using found images and textures, blending structure & spontaneity.
