So many of you have been loving the folded book projects over on YouTube, books are a great way to display your art in a 3D and interactive way. As a beginner you can achieve very sophisticated looking book structures that elevate your gelli prints & decorative papers (especially the plethora of beautiful papers we made in our recent master classes!) I figured this would be a great opportunity to build on the skills we have been learning with the folded book series. The first series will include 3 videos that will teach you 3 beginner friendly no sew book structures/book binding techniques! Each series will build on the skills you have learned previously, taking you through to intermediate and advance book binding techniques.
Series 2 Continued: Innovative Hidden Hinge Book Tutorial. In this course I will show you two variations of a really cool book inspired by the traditional hidden hinge spine but with a twist! In this 3 hour tutorial we will construct a hard and soft cover version of this unique book structure. This is a beginner/intermediate level book binding technique perfect for mixed media artist and easily adaptable to mediums that include lots of embellishment on the page such as collage, assemblage and more!
Part 2 of the innovative book arts series that will cover one now sew book and one sewn book, no needle required. Book 1 Small Black & White Book : A concertina style In this tutorial I will show you a new take on the concertina book format. My unique twist will give the effect of a traditional western bound book where the pages open left to right versus in the folded style. This tutorial will also include the process of me staining the book covers! Book 2 Envelope Book : A great introduction to hand sewn book structures. This book does not require a needle so it is perfect for beginners. You will learn to achieve a beautiful slip not stitch using wax thread that resembles the coptic stitch. You can use any style envelops including standard #10 envelopes, invitation envelopes or the manila envelopes, as I used! (Thrift stores are great resources for inexpensive envelopes!) I included a bit of staining and eco dying on the gelli plate in this tutorial for inspiration purposes.

Building a Theme & Storyline: We’ll start developing a theme and storyline for your book. Next we will go through the process of sorting through your papers, photos, and treasures. I’ll show you how to balance visual and conceptual harmony to make each page meaningful. There will be a color theory crash lesson where you will learn to choose a palette that complements your theme. You’ll experiment with dyeing and eco staining papers to create a cohesive, personalized look. I’ll share why certain elements are chosen or eliminated to create a cohesive story. you’ll understand how to make thoughtful choices that align beautifully with your intended theme. You’ll learn techniques for achieving an authentic aged appearance, enhancing the emotive connection and evoking a sense that your artwork originates from a time or place long past. By the end, you’ll have the skills to create collages that not only resonate with viewers but also tell a rich story.
This course explores photo collage and mail art. It is the second in the “art of visual storytelling” series. I will teach photo collage and mail art through the theme of “my funny valentine.” Participants will learn how to create portraiture collages from elements of magazine clippings while exploring realism and abstract art. Your portraiture can be a self portrait, a muse, a lover, a loved one etc. the goal is learning how to execute a theme and understanding how to overcome challenges associated with collaging.
Across cultures, the five elements Earth, Water, Fire, Air, & Space—shape spiritual traditions & art. This course explores these forces through collage, using color & composition to create personal narratives. Move beyond Western color theory, learn how color meanings shift across cultures. Red may symbolize passion in one tradition or mourning in another. By exploring these perspectives, artists develop a deeper sensitivity to color’s role in storytelling. Each element holds distinct qualities: Earth yellow represents stability, Water blue reflects emotion, Fire red signifies transformation, Air green embodies renewal, and Space black represents the unknown. These energies appear in traditions worldwide, from Navajo sand paintings to Mayan geometry. Through guided exercises, participants create mandalas using found images and textures, blending structure & spontaneity.
